SmartStop’s De Luna Wins Mexico National ITT

SmartStop Pro Cycling’s Flavio DeLuna smashed the 45km Mexico Professional Time Trial National Championships bringing the team to their fifth national championship title across three nations.

Having finishing a close second in 2014, DeLuna said of his win: “Nationals was a crazy feeling. I arrive in Toluca two days before the race, Toluca is one of the highest cities in Mexico around 2,700 meters above sea level, you can only imagine the feeling of doing a flat out effort for an hour.

“I knew the course from previous years and I knew it was a bit too flat for my liking, but I still wanted to see where the legs were after missing some racing at Beauce, maybe just thinking of it as an opener for the road race.

“The Mexican Cycling organization changed the course a couple of hours before the race. You can imagine the feeling of not knowing anything about the new course but at the end it played in my favor as the new course had plenty of climbing and that really changed my mindset, I really felt that I could win.”

“At this altitude you have to be very cautious when and where you go hard, if you go above your line you wont recover, there is just not enough oxygen.  I knew the fitness was there; it was just a matter of relaxing and getting the best legs.  Finishing and seeing all that work come into this result really put a smile on my face.  I still think there is a lot of room to improve and no matter what wearing this jersey will make me give my work that extra percent.”
